Chisinau

Chisinau is the administrative, territorial, economic, scientific and cultural center of the Republic of Moldova. It is situated at the edge of the southeast slope of the Central Plateau of Moldova. Chisinau is crossed by the river Bâc with the tributaries of Durleşti and Bulbocica. It is one of the largest cities in Central and South Europe. On 1 January 1984 there were 604,500 people, according to the 1989 census - 661,400, in 1996 - 662,000 people, and in 2004, at the last census, 589,445 people.
