There are two main hypotheses about the name Chisinau and where it comes from. The first hypothesis comes from Hungarian language: (Kis+Jeno) = small headwater. The following words are connected to early Moldovian settlers who held power between 1224- 1359. The second hypothesis was issued by the Soviet researchers and adopted  by the Soviet authorities. They suggested that the name Chisinau was formed from two words: Romanian word "Noua" + Hungarian word "Kisla" = Kislanoua.
