Moldova is an independent state, a former Soviet republic bordered by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. The Republic of Moldova is also known as Basarabia. On 27 of August 1991 Moldova had declared its independence. The Independence was officially recognized in March 2, 1992 when Moldova gained the membership of the United Nations. In 1994 Moldova joined the Partnership for Peace Programme also known as NATO and in 1995 became a member of the Council of Europe. Chisinau is the capital city and the biggest city in Moldova. Other big, popular cities are known as: Tiraspol, Thighina, Balti, Cahul and Orhei.

 

The population of Republic of Moldova was set in 2004 at around 3.607 million people. The population id gradually decreasing, eg: by 10,9 thousand compared to 2003 statistics. More than half of countries population live in the rural areas: 2129,5 thousands or 59%. In the Urban sector there are 1477,9 thousands or 41%. The population in relation to sex was establised at around 52.1% of women and 47.9% of men. There are more than 700,000 thousand pensioners in Moldova. The population age median was established at 34.6 years old in 2004 with an average of: 34.6 for Males and 36.2 for Females.

Most of Moldova territory lies between the area's two main rivers, the Dniester and the Prut. Geographical shape on the map of Moldova Republic of is compared to a grape. At around 33.843 km square Moldova is considered a small country currently standing 32nd in Europe. It takes 350 km from North to South and 150 km from West to East. An important fact about Moldova is that the country is landlocked between its neighbours Ukraine and Romania. the Southern border of the Rebublic lies along near the black sea. This is the direction through which economic relations are mentained with other countries.
